Sixteen partner organizations of the SFILDC represent over 1,500 immigrant residents of San Francisco from over 30 countries. Attorneys and advocates help SFILDC clients to present their cases before the Immigration Court in San Francisco and various immigration agencies, and if necessary, through the appellate process.
SFILDC attorneys fight vigorously on behalf of their clients and identify forms of relief available to them. Our attorneys have been successful filing for and obtaining forms of relief, including: Withholding of Removal, Protection under the Convention Against Torture, Asylum, Special immigrant Juvenile Status, U Visas for crime victims, T Visas for victims of trafficking, Protection under the Violence Against Women Act, Adjustment of Status, and Cancellation of Removal. Additionally, SFILDC attorneys have been successful in reopening cases where clients were ordered removed without receiving proper notice of their hearings and terminating proceedings where the Government violated its own rules and regulations regarding due process.
SFILDC attorneys also represent residents of San Francisco who are detained by ICE within the San Francisco Immigration Court’s jurisdiction. In addition to helping detained individuals fight their cases in Immigration Court, SFILDC attorneys advocate for the release of those community members in detention who can be reunited with their families while they are awaiting a final decision on their immigration case.
The initial intake and referral of cases is centralized through The Justice & Diversity Center of The Bar Association of San Francisco, and technical assistance is provided to the attorneys by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center and the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies.
